Once, a young employee came to me after receiving his first Employee of the Monthcertificate. He smiled politely but said something that made me think deeply “Sir, I’m happy, but more than the award, I wish my manager had just told me that my work mattered.”

In today’s corporate world, recognition has become a checkbox item awards, certificates, and applause during monthly meetings. While all these are important, the essence of recognition is often lost. True recognition is not a one-day event, it’s a continuous emotional connection that tells an employee You are valued

During my years in HR, I’ve observed a simple truth “people don’t leave companies they leave indifference.”

A simple word of appreciation, a genuine smile, or acknowledging someone’s extra effort often means more than any formal reward.

One day, I met a housekeeping associate who worked silently for years. When I asked about his motivation, he said, Sir, when someone notices my work, it feels like I exist here. That moment defined what recognition truly means to me visibility and respect.

Recognition, when heartfelt, builds belongingness. It transforms workplaces into communities. It doesn’t always need money or titles it needs mindfulness.

Here’s what I’ve learned over time

  • Recognition should be timely praise delayed is value denied.

  • It must be personal mention what exactly the person did well.

  • It should be consistent not reserved only for top performers.

  • Above all, it should be genuine employees can sense when it’s mechanical.

Recognition is not just about appreciating results it’s about acknowledging the person behind the result.

Next time you notice someone doing their best, don’t wait for an award ceremony. Just say, I see what you did … thank you.

That simple sentence can change someone’s day and sometimes, their career.
